Dental implants have become the gold standard for replacing missing teeth for good reason: They provide a restorative solution that is both long-lasting and aesthetically pleasing. A new implant serves as a replacement tooth that looks and feels just like a natural tooth. And you can expect it to last for decades to come, unlike other teeth replacement treatment options.
A dental implant is made up of three basic parts: a metal post that is implanted into the jawbone, an abutment that is fitted onto this post, and a crown placed onto the abutment.
Types of Implant Restorations:
Fixed implant prostheses refer to either crowns or dentures that are fixed onto the implants and do not come out of the patient’s mouth. The implants must first integrate into the bone before the definitive prosthetic is attached onto the implant by a connector called an abutment. Implant-supported crowns are a great alternative to dental bridges when there is a smaller range of missing teeth. For patients that have lost more teeth or are at risk of losing a large amount of teeth, an implant-supported fixed denture (sometimes called a hybrid or an All-on-4) serves a role to restore the function and esthetics of their smile.
As the cost of individual implants may be highly priced for a fixed denture, more people are turning to removable dentures as a way to achieve a better smile. Removable overdentures attach to several implants by an abutment but are not fully fixed onto them. This allows the patient to take the denture out for convenience, while ensuring greater retention and stability.
Receiving dental implants begins with a consultation with your dental team here at Aesthetic Dentistry of Rockland County. During this time, we will be thoroughly examining your mouth, which may include the taking of x-rays, as well as going over all of the dental implant options available and developing an individual plan for your dental implant procedure. Don't worry if you do not currently have sufficient bone for the placement of a dental implant. Most patients will qualify for a bone graft procedure that prepares them for receiving a dental implant.
Your next appointment is when we will place the implant in your jawbone to replace your missing tooth, at our sister office Aesthetic Dental Center of Bergen County with either our oral surgeon or periodontist. Although each situation is different, most patients experience far less pain and discomfort that they expect. In fact, most are able to resume normal activities and work the following day.
You will be kept comfortable with the use of local anesthesia during your procedure. Any discomfort that you may experience after your implant surgery is not unlike that of any other oral surgery. It is not uncommon to experience some swelling, minor bleeding and pain, and patients are typically able to use over-the-counter medications to manage any pain or discomfort.
The next step involves waiting. Your new implant and jawbone will be fusing together to provide a long-lasting foundation for your implant. This may take a few months to complete. Once your new dental implant is firmly bonded with your jawbone, our restorative dentist Dr. Nataliya Petlyuk will place a connector, known as an abutment, onto the implant. Sometimes an abutment is placed during the same appointment as the implant was placed.
Finally, Dr. Petlyuk will custom-make your new dental crown to attach to the abutment. Following your dental implant procedure, you will need to practice the same sound oral hygiene regimen at home as with your natural teeth. Although the implant materials are virtually indestructible, gums and bone are not. Practicing proper oral hygiene at home ensures that your dental implant will last as long as possible.
